Rhythm ‘N Dance presents four 6-week dance and drum classes for adults beginning October 12, 2010. We are excited to offer Afro-Venezuelan, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Contemporary dance classes, in addition to West African Drumming. All classes will be held at the Source Theater DC, located at 1835 14th Street, NW along the thriving 14th Street arts corridor
Kulture Kids Dance Workshops
The influence of dance within the African Diaspora can be recognized in its past and present traditions in our society. The movement and the stories behind all dances within the Diaspora makes known a common past and stimulates a shared sense of values and beliefs. The purpose of the Kulture Kids Dance Program is to expose our kids/teens to the history of dance within the African Diaspora.
Afro – Caribbean Dance with Stefanie Belnavis
Tuesdays, 7 – 8:30p (beginning October 12) Stefanie Belnavis’s Contemporary Jamaican Folk Dance classes are a fusion of Jamaica’s Folk dance forms, namely Kumina, Dinki Mini, Bruckins, and Gerreh, combined with a Contemporary Modern influence, namely Release Technique.
Afro – Venezuelan Dance with Mesi Walton
Thursdays, 7 – 8:30p (beginning October 13) Join Mesi Walton in a six-week workshop on Afro-Venezuelan dance. This is an opportunity for attendees to learn about the culture of Venezuela through dance.
African Contempoary Dance with Andong Nkobena
Afro – Contemporary Dance with Andog Nkobena Fridays, 7 – 8:30p (beginning October 15) The Contemporary African Dance class introduces the fundamentals of coupe de calle and ndombolo in both their music and dance aspects. The history of this contemporary dance style will be discussed and its dance vocabulary established during the course of the class. The basic movements including waist winding/locking with intricate, rapid footwork. The up-tempo music and high-energy dance steps will allow students to strengthen their core, increase their flexibility and endurance.
West African Drum Class with Malari Moore
Wednesdays, 7 – 9p (beginning October 13) Join D’jembe soloist Malari Moore for a West African Drum class that will focus on exploring rhythms of Senegal, Mali and Guinea. Beginning and intermediate drummers are welcome, as this class is designed to improve your drumming technique, help you identify rhythms and styles and gain experience with playing in groups. NOTE: Attendees must bring their own drum (djembe, djun, songba, etc.).
